Video description

The video consists of still images of books and text accompanied by audio of Petra and Alasdair reading the same expert from 1982, Janine. It starts with the title, Translating Alasdair Gray: It takes courage! followed by text saying, Petra Pugar shares the challenges of translating Alasdair Gray’s work. As Petra talks there is a photograph of Alasdair Gray side on from the waist up. He’s a white man in late middle-age with dishevelled hair, large wire-framed glasses, a short grey beard and plump pink cheeks wearing a crumpled blue shirt, grey sweater, tweed jacket and holding a large old green book. Petra’s introduction is followed by Alasdair reading an excerpt from Chapter 11 of 1982, Janine called Galloping which is shown onscreen at the same time. Petra then reads her Croatian version of the same passage with an accompanying onscreen transcript. The video ends with the text, Explore more… Discover how literary translator Petra Pugar recreates novels like Shuggie Bain and 1982, Janine.
