About A Gray Space

What are the building blocks and chemistry of an Alasdair Gray inspired space? Connect and contribute to A Gray Space to help us find out. We hope the edges will spread out infinitely. But together we can find the heart!
— A Gray Space

What is Gray Space?

In urban geography Gray Spaces are areas of informal, unplanned development on the margins of cities and towns. Sprawling and chaotic but also vibrant and empowering.

Our Gray Space has blurry edges too. It’s an inter-world zone that can hold more than one reality. Everyone sees it differently. It’s not tidy. It’s surprising. It has dark corners. It has a sense of humour.

Alasdair Gray shared the same characteristics. Sprawling and untidy. Chaotic and productive. Surprising, playful, vibrant, dark, empowering and full of different realities. An inspirational person who lived to create. And who encouraged and supported others to do the same.

A Gray Space is inspired by Alasdair and embodies what we value in him. A home for ideas and hard work, driven by love. Because like Alasdair, we believe that by working together we can create something beautiful and good.

Who are we?

A Gray Space is a personal passion project initiated by Alasdair Gray’s nieces Katrina (Kat) and Tracy together with friend and fellow Alasdair enthusiast, Anita Sullivan. Independent and unfunded, many hands have helped lay the foundations. We hope that many more will help us develop by visiting, sharing, connecting and collaborating.
